– Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish, a long-time expert on older persons and how they maintain financial security, spoke out on an issue that should be receiving more attention in this presidential election – the future of the Social Security system.
While various leaders have raised the issue over time, Social Security has not been a significant topic during the 2016 presidential election. “Social Security is critically important to the financial security of older Americans,”
said Budish. “It is long overdue for all presidential candidates to discuss their plans for updating and strengthening the Social Security program for the 21st century. Candidates, their campaigns, debate moderators or participants, and the general public should demand details on how each candidate plans to address this pressing issue.”
Barbara Sykes, the state Director of AARP Ohio, echoed this concern – “We are pressing every candidate to lay out their plans to update Social Security to ensure it is financially sound with adequate benefits for decades to come. AARP continues to fight to guarantee that hard working Americans who have paid into Social Security will receive the benefits they have earned. It is a crucial time for this discussion.”
