CLEVELAND, OHIO
– Cuyahoga County, Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc. (MMPI), and Turner Construction Company are hosting a “Topping Out” ceremony and press conference to commemorate the completion of steel erection on Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center on Friday, June 22 at 11 a.m. on Mall B on the current job site.

The ceremony will include brief remarks from Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald, City of Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and Dr. Delos “Toby” Cosgrove, CEO of the Cleveland Clinic. Among the invited guests are Cuyahoga County Council President C. Ellen Connally, City of Cleveland Council President Martin Sweeney, Ward 3 City Councilman Joe Cimperman and local healthcare leaders. The event will be emceed by Jim Bennett, senior vice president, MMPI. Following the remarks from County Executive FitzGerald, Mayor Jackson and Dr. Cosgrove, the symbolic steel beam will be signed and raised by crane into place along Lakeside Avenue.

The symbolic steel beam in the “Topping Out” ceremony will be adorned with an evergreen tree symbolizing growth and good luck, and the U.S. flag, along with signatures from ironworkers and other construction crews. The use of a U.S. flag and tree on the steel beam is an American iron worker tradition that dates back to the beginning of the last century.

Media outlets interested in covering the event should reply by contacting Dave Johnson, Public Relations Director, MMPI at (216) 920‐1437 or djohnson@mmart.com.

Media parking will be available along the newly‐constructed East Mall Drive (along Public Auditorium). TV trucks should access East Mall Drive from Lakeside Avenue. Please let us know if you plan to broadcast live from the site.
