CLEVELAND – On Thursday June 27th, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office congratulated 24 citizens who participated in the inaugural Medical Examiner’s Office Citizens Academy.

24 county residents completed the 8-week program. They were a mix of county residents working in the public, private, and non-profit sectors.

The Medical Examiner’s Citizens Academy was designed to educate county residents on forensic science and how it aligns with the duties and responsibilities of the agency. Residents participated in a variety of lectures and demonstrations led by doctors, scientists, and investigators.

As the academy came to close, one resident wrote “I’ve learned so much - not only about the technical side of things, but that the medical examiner’s office is truly a multi-functional facility. The importance of this office to the citizens of Cuyahoga County is immeasurable!”

Another resident explained “Thank you so much for instituting this program! I've always had an interest in forensics from watching television shows (non-fiction), and I was excited when I came across the opportunity to learn what really happens behind the scenes.”

“The citizens academy at the Medical Examiner’s Office was a fantastic success. The participants gave glowing feedback and it was clear to me that they had acquired a more thorough understanding of the makings of the agency,” said Dr. Gilson. “I am deeply grateful to the staff at MEO for making this a success.”

The Medical Examiner’s Office Citizens Academy is provided free of charge and open to all eligible residents of Cuyahoga County. The next academy will take place in the fall of 2019 (dates to be determined).
