Cuyahoga County has one of the worst infant mortality rates in the county. These high rates are unacceptable particularly in a community like ours which is home to some of the highest quality healthcare in the world.
In late 2015 thirteen Cuyahoga county civic leaders established First Year Cleveland (FYC) to reduce the rate of babies dying before their first birthday, particularly among African Americans.
Cuyahoga County and the City of Cleveland together committed $2 million to launch the program; with an additional $4.86 million provided by the Ohio Department of Medicaid.
To date, FYC has dispersed funds to programs that are proven to be effective, has hired an executive director and recently completed a strategic plan.
