Legislation to be Introduced to Enforce Consumer Protection Laws

– The Cuyahoga County Department of Consumer Affairs
will introduce legislation to County Council that will focus on investigation and enforcement of consumer protections. The new legislation gives the Department of Consumer Affairs the ability to recover money for those who have been scammed or subject to unfair or deceptive consumer practices.
“Our Department of Consumer Affairs does great work throughout our region to keep our residents and businesses safe from fraud and scams,”
said Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish. “The introduction of this legislation to County Council will give Cuyahoga County residents and businesses comfort in knowing that we are committed to creating and enforcing a county-wide consumer protection standard.”
The recommended legislation will set a model of consumer protection focused on education; investigation and enforcement; and cooperation with entities to create a fair marketplace. The legislation will allow the Department of Consumer Affairs to:
- Grant the Director of Consumer Affairs the authority to conduct investigations and to enforce consumer protection laws.
- Enforce the existing consumer protection and weights and measures laws, including those set forth in the Ohio Revised Code and Ohio Administrative Code.
- Conduct initial investigations, review, and select the areas of enforcement most beneficial to Cuyahoga County consumers, in addition to referring investigations to the appropriate agency.
- Provide a forum to protect as well as educate Cuyahoga County consumers on their rights.
“Since county council established the Department of Consumer Affairs in 2012, it has proven itself as an effective and outspoken advocate for county consumers,” said Dan Brady, President, Cuyahoga County Council. “We have looked forward to enhancing the protections this department enforces. Under the leadership of Director Sheryl Harris, these ordinances will protect county residents from fraudsters and scammers and reinforce trust in local businesses.”
