Animal Shelter Staff Isolating At-Risk Animals

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH – Officials at the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter announced today that they will be temporarily closing their facility on Tuesday June 5 and Wednesday June 6. Animal Shelter Administrator Mindy Naticchioni, in consultation with medical staff at the facility, determined that a short closure would be in the best interest of the dogs currently at the shelter.

Five young stray dogs brought into the Animal Shelter over the last three weeks have passed away due to apparent respiratory illness.  Animal Shelter staff have identified the common origination of the affected dogs.  The Animal Shelter is employing testing protocol and consulting veterinary experts to attempt to determine the exact nature of the illness

During the closure, Animal Shelter staff will expand their considerable cleaning and sanitization efforts in the facility as a precaution to minimize the exposure of sickness to the dogs at the site.“At this moment, we are making every effort to ensure our dogs stay healthy and safe,” said Ms. Naticchioni.

“We will utilize this time to continue completing as thorough of a cleaning as possible to safeguard against any potential illness going forward.  We hope to learn more about the reason for the tragic loss of these young dogs through our medical investigation efforts.”

This is the first time for such a closure at the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter.

The Animal Shelter will continue to be open for individuals looking for lost dogs during their normal business hours.
